I bought my wife seven peafowl a couple months ago. They are lovely birds and I want to learn how to care for them and raise peachicks. We have a small hobby farm and the peafowl are a nice addition to the place. We live in sounthern Indiana.

We have never raised pefowl before. We have three males and four females that are suppose to be breeding age. We where told they laid eggs last year. So far no signs of egg laying or any male showing from the males.

The males are two blues and one black wing. The females are three blues and one pied. I am surprised how calm these birds are.

I hope to learn more and enjoy more of our peafowls.

Hi Stoney Ridge - greetings from a neighbor across the river. We're glad to have you join us and hope you'll get answers to all your questions here. The UPA magazine will have its annual "Chick Mania" spread coming out in the next issue. You'd probably enjoy joining the club and seeing these photos, which will give you an idea of what you have to look forward to. (This is probably my favorite issue of the year.) And there will be lots of helpful articles about caring for chicks.

My hens aren't laying yet either, but will begin later this month. The first one or two eggs they lay won't be fertile, so I toss those.

Sounds like you have some beauties - will you post some photos?

Yesterday was the first day we saw the pecocks spread thier fans out. It was a very pretty site. We did get some pics and I hope to post them to my website soon.

A question. Do I need to put nest boxes out for the hens? IF so what size should the nest box be?
