Does anyone know of any other peafowl rescue source besides Petfinder? _________________ Jennifer

Stray, injured or owner-surrendered poultry are usually taken to the local animal shelter because that's the agency with local/state authority. Most shelters advertise on petfinder in addition to their individual websites.
Another resource could be a local bird or wildlife rehabilitation facility. They don't post their birds for re-homing if peafowl are considered "wild". Once rehabbed, the caregiver might just release the bird if it meets with local Ag Dept. regulations.
We have a wildlife rehabber a few miles from here who has been called to remove the occasional peafowl. She adores them and keeps them. (She was also my original resource for peafowl care, and introduced me to the UPA years ago.) So, you might call a few wildlife folks and let them know you'd be willing to help. Due to budget cuts, and your level of expertise, I'm sure they would be very happy for your offer os assistance. Most of these people are volunteers and their groups are 501c3 nonprofits. And most of them have to put quite a bit of personal cash into their rescues to stay afloat. Let us know what you find out, okay? _________________ Be the change you want to see in the world. |

OMG, you're kidding, right? When I posted that listing, they didn't have a photo available. You mean they think a rooster is a peahen? Maybe they got their listings mixed up. That's a riot.
I emailed the shelter (through my hysterical laughter) and asked them what's up. I think they will re-post a photo soon. Sorry, I'm still laughing... |

Yeah...i d too. I also emailed them. I wonder if it is a peahen they have, or they think that chicken is a peahen! _________________ Jennifer

Okay, here's the scoop. <G> The shelter is replacing the chicken photo. They are desperate to get Pearl to safety, as they don't know much about peafowl. The shelter is short-staffed and under-funded (no surprise here).
If you are interested in this hen, contact the shelter. There will not be any adoption fee, and they can only ship COD. I don't know if NPIP would prevent crossing state lines, but didn't mention that to the shelter. Obviously, it would be better for all if you could retrieve her in person. I sure hope someone will take her. Her crest is lovely, and she looks Blue from the photo. |

I would love to help her, but she is 19 hours away from me. I imagine it is too cold to ship her...we are having high temperatures in the single digits in the next week or so...a blizzard is forecasted for this weekend! UGH _________________ Jennifer

Just to let you know, I contacted them about Pearl and told them that if they absolutely cannot find her a home I would be willing and how much would the shipping be. She responded by telling me that they will not ship. _________________ Jennifer

The email I rec'd from the shelter said they would release Pearl to a third party if they were willing to ship. Want me to inquire again? Did your response come from gerig@wjordan? _________________ Be the change you want to see in the world. |

Yup, that's who the email came from. She did actually tell me that they wouldn't ship, but a thirdy party could. But, I don't know of anybody in that area who could do that. I am sure somebody will give her a home. I wish she was closer to me...I certainly can deal with free adoption fee. Oh well, someday there will be a peafowl in need closer to me that I can give a happy home to! _________________ Jennifer

Thanks to featherhead Pearl now has a new home with me, as of today !
Pearl is one of the quietest , sweetest peafowl I've ever had the pleasure to meet .
She has a special " spirit" about her and settled in with my other birds like she had been with them all her life, she's getting along famously with all of them already! ( even the little pecker head guineas didn't give her a hard time )
The folks that had her really hated to give her up but just wanted to find her a good home where she could be with other peafowl . They're such caring individuals and if you ever want to board your dogs in N.C., these people have a totally AWESOME state of the art facility, WOW !!
Thanks again featherhead and folks, please check out petfinder from time to time when you can, I found a GEM of a bird named Pearl today ! |
