Hmm I was wondering if staining or painting would deter them.
They like to drill holes in our barn and I go outside with a net and catch them and put them in a wire mesh container and we relase them somewhere far away. You can literally reach your hand in the net and pull out a carpenter bee and it will not sting you. I have never had one sting me but they do try to scare you. For example when I swipe at one with the net and miss it, it will fly up to me and zig zag back and forth trying to look threatening. Really it is all a bluff. It is fun to freak people out by holding a carpenter bee in your hand. Now wasps and ground hornets I do NOT mess with.
